Résumé Tips

Preparing your résumé

A résumé (CV) is a brief, concise document that presents, and effectively sells, your most relevant and positive credentials for employment. You need to display your relevant skills accurately in a way that encourages the reader to study your details.

An employer will usually spend 15 to 20 seconds reviewing your résumé, so the content of your résumé must be clear, concise, and targeted to the type of job for which you are applying.

An effective résumé gets you an interview, not a job.

Section One

In the résumé heading you can write your general information:

List your qualifications. When giving your educational details show your highest qualification first. Include details of degree classification, but avoid listing the degree syllabus—this indicates little depth to the rest of the résumé content.

Section Two

Skill Sets—the Skills Summary section of your résumé includes your main skills. You should only include keywords in his section, do not go into lengthy descriptions of your skills.

Provide your reader an accurate representation of your strengths.

List your main skills and provide some indication of the time spent in each different environment.

Highlight your achievements derived from utilising your skill sets.

Section Three

Employment History and experience in reverse chronological order, writing in depth about your current or most recent position.

This is the most important section as it must demonstrate a history of success and progression. If your work history is lengthy, then only detail the last 5 years and list the remaining.

Avoid writing the résumé from a third party perspective. It is from this section that the interviewer will compose most of the interview questions.

Always be honest.
